My name is Michael Bergerson, and I am seeking election to
be the Judge of La Porte Superior Court Number 1. I am running unopposed in the
Democratic primary, so my signs will not be out until later this year (request
yours here). Still, I have been campaigning hard, and it has been great to
meet or reconnect with so many people at the numerous town forums, candidate
nights, and community events throughout La Porte County this year. I am a
lifelong resident of La Porte County, a Hoosier Scholar, and a graduate of both
John Carroll University and Northern Illinois University, School of Law. I am
blessed to have been able to raise my children here.
Since the announcement of my candidacy in December, my
belief that this Court must be taken in a new direction has never wavered. I
have a vision for this Court and a plan to restore the public’s confidence in
it. If elected Judge, I will provide the strong leadership needed to restore
its reputation as one of the preeminent trial courts in the state.
As a 24-year veteran Deputy Prosecuting Attorney for the
county, I am a steadfast advocate for the rights of victims. I am frustrated by
defendants who have been allowed to “game the system” and add to the growing
backlog of criminal cases currently on the Superior 1 trial calendar. I believe
that justice delayed is justice denied.
If I am elected, you will have a Judge who has actually
maintained a successful civil practice for thirty (30) years and knows the
importance of timely resolution of civil law cases. I have represented clients
in courts throughout the state of Indiana as well as in Boston, Philadelphia,
Knoxville, Amarillo, and Eugene. For over twenty years, I have represented the
Coca-Cola Corporation in Northern Indiana. I also represent the Michigan City
Redevelopment Commission and the La Porte County Convention and Visitors
Bureau. With this broad experience as a civil litigator, I have shared your
frustrations with endless delays and routine matters held “under advisement.”
My plan will provide easier access to the courtroom, ensuring more efficient
civil case resolution. I will put an end to the practice of having a “full
calendar with an empty courtroom.”
Like Senior Judge Chapala, I will manage the Court with a
staff reflecting this county’s diversity. I believe that the fair and impartial
administration of justice demand it.
Your continued support of my candidacy is appreciated. I
need your help, and I hope to see you along the trail. For more information,
please send the campaign an e-mail at mbergerson@cablespeed.com. Thank you,
Michael S. Bergerson

La Porte Superior Court No. 1.
